I've serviced a number of second hand turntables, including several of my own, and recommend this route if you or a contact can do the tweaking. There are some great turntables out there for £500-1000, some with tonearms fitted.

It may also be worth servicing your 166/II and fitting a new tonearm.

Hi. I don't think the tonearm on a 166 mkII can be replaced for something else. At least I don't know how to do it.

Keep both! There is something about vintage vinyl playing on a vintage table that can't be beaten. Having had all my gear serviced at one point and another - you'll not regret it. 

Also sometimes its a simple matter of changing a small connection and/or wire that makes all the difference. Sometimes swapping a needle or cart can make an old system sound new again - this is coming from someone who isn't a speaker head!
