My son recently sold his Project Debut TT to a friend. It has since developed a fault in that 50% of the time it starts up spinning in the wrong direction. Why would this be?

It's probably an AC synchronous motor, so it will be affected by the mains phase.

I had a motor that mostly went backwards. It that case, one of the windings had gone open-circuit. Also, as Chris suggested, a dodgy capacitor would cause the same fault
