Just to wrap this thread up, the hum has now been eliminated.
The transformer from RS went back and they refunded the cost. I then ordered an Audio quality 300VA transformer from a custom torroid shop in the SE (if you want their name please PM me). I spec'd it with the man who did the winding, a lower flux level, a low mechanical noise high grade core material (30M1H), an Electrostatic screen and lastly a Goss band. All the bells and whistles! The result, perfect silence.....at last. Peter
