I have always wondered how a diamond, the hardest substance on earth, could be worn out by being dragged across a vinyl groove. A cartridge manufacturer told me it is rare for the diamond stylus itself to be worn out, and that in most cases the suspension of the cartridge wears out much sooner. Similar to a cassette deck where the motor and other mechanical parts of the deck wear out much faster than the tape heads.
So what is the truth, can the diamond stylus itself really last forever? Edited by Analog Kid - 12 Mar 2009 at 1:38pm |

Firstly, since it is possible to polish diamonds and cut facets on them it is possible to wear them. Secondly, in the case of crankshaft bearings, it is the case-hardened crankshaft that wears faster than the soft white metal bearing. Reason, the softer surface retains any very hard particles imbedded in its surface which then abrade the harder surface passing over it (rather like abrasive cloth/paper). Nothing lasts forever |

A material can be hard but can also be brittle. In other words hard doesn't mean tough.
