There seem to be mixed views on the SRX around the web. The vinyl looks a lot like the MoFi One Step - translucent. I have 2 of the One Step releases and they sound really good. Noticeably better than their Analogue Productions counterparts. Of course that may have little to do with the vinyl material.

There have been issues with some SRX records, but there have also been problems with some One Step and AP pressings. The combination of high demand, higher prices, and the less-than-optimal ordering/purchase process has agitated most buyers. To make (music) matters worse, MMJ either underestimated the number of flawed copies and/or wasn't able to get additional records from the pressing plant due to the pandemic and there are several buyers that can't get replacements.
That said, when the discs are good, the product is excellent. They've set the standard for quality reissues. If there's something you're interested in still in-print, now would be the time to get it. It looks like MMJ is winding down and the prices for out-of-print records are selling for exorbitant prices. Hopefully Blue Note will pick up the slack with more high quality reissues comparable to the Tone Poet series.

I have had exactly that experience. My Stevie Ray Vaughan One-Step had one damaged disc which Music Direct replaced and recently I ordered an SRX of Kenny Burrell that had a bad track with scratches. I have returned it for a refund. I was able to play the other tracks and the difference between it and my copy of a MM non-SRX version is negligible on my equipment. The purchase process on Music Matters for new releases is really bad - they underestimate demand and cannot fill orders. |

I just counted my MMJ vinyl on Discogs and I have 32, a mix of 33 and 45 rpm and one SRX. I have quite a few tone poet and 80th too. And I’ve got three mofi one-steps, including Mingus Ah Um and Monk Monk’s Dream. I also have a number of Analogue Productions 45rpm jazz titles.
My assessment is that you can’t go wrong with any of the above. But the MMJ are my preferred titles. I like the one-steps too. It there’s a different sound to them. If you want crazy prices, those are much higher than MMJ, even with all the price inflation. The tone poet and 80th are all good, with some better than others. But you basically can’t go wrong with Kevin Gray mastering.
