Neville Marriner died yesterday aged 92.

As founder and conductor of The Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields he was one of the most successful and prolific conductors of his generation.

His recordings are some of my most cherished - Handel and Vivaldi, but also Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Tippett. Coming home from Gramex or HMV with a Marriner record on Argo (immaculately recorded) was always an event.

He introduced me to the Bach Harpsichord Concertos with Igor Kipnis and the London Strings - the 4 record set became a favourite of mine.   Agree on the Argo recordings too, just dug out his Four Seasons with Alan Loveday on violin for a reprise and vale.

Ah yes, his Four Seasons . . . The opening of Winter is the spookiest I've heard: you get a real chill . . Shocked

It just shows how interpretations can vary and what a bit of altered bowing can achieve.

His recording with ASMF of Grieg's Holberg Suite coupled with Dvorak & Tchaikovsky
String Serenades on Decca 'Legends' is superbly performed & recorded.
Likewise the Mozart Serenades on double Philips CD I own.
A box set of recordings from the Argos years I also own are very diverse but all share excellent playing and sound quality.
