It tells me about Italian design, good looks and accurate machining but little about how this improves the sound, can someone else explain? I guess in warmer weather it wouldn't be a good idea to accidentally leave the record on there...

Extraordinary. I wonder if it would work with any of my early 80's vinyl that's as thin as a Rizla paper?

No worries about colouration from the platter or mat! I would be concerned about the resonances of the vinyl flapping in the breeze (airborne sound) though.
Italian style, yes, but a case of form over function perhaps.
Only listening will tell, but I would imagine it would be at a price I don't wish to afford.
Just listen, if it sounds good to you, enjoy it.
