Does any one read Hi Fi Mags?
More to the point, do any of them tell the truth? What is the truth?
I was telling Darren that I buy 1 mag a year to find out if the market has changed, and what is new!
Music? Good question! My wife and I love live music, especially if a pint is on the go as well. We are lucky to have a nearby local that arranges live music events to raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust. Pie and pea supper, live music for £8.00 each with good friends.
Sadly my wife does not share my interest in matters Hi Fi. But does let me get on with it! We do tend to surround ourselves with music and have some form of reproduction equipment in nearly every room.
I have grown up with music starting with Billy Cotton and " Wakey, wakey ". Life would be so empty without it !
Going to see Bill Wyman's Rhythm Kings next month.
And if you have never heard of Boo Hewerdine, do yourself a favour and seek him out.
Adrian.

Hi Fi Magazines are a tricky subject for me.
As a manufacturer we obviously need to have good reviews in them, and we have to hope that as many people as possible will read about us. However I don't read them much because I discovered many years ago that they're as addictive as drugs: They seem to plant a feeling of dissatisfaction in people's minds, always suggesting that there is better to be had. However, my findings from my own experience and through talking with many other people, is that there is little better to be had, so why do they infer there is? Sales of course. Magazines don't sell if they become "stale" and suggesting things are getting better all the time makes it look like they contain fresh content. True, there are always new flashy photographs and catchy write-ups, but to me, there hasn't been any real progress in high fidelity. I think my problem in understanding hi-fi magazines is that I'd believed that hi-fi was an abbreviation of the words high fidelity, but it seems in most cases I was wrong. So am I trashing hi-fi magazines? No, for the reason I set out above. My advice to the reader is to read between the lines, and cross reference anything you're serious about, for example; when considering a new piece of kit. I'm sure many have missed out on the sound we do because they stumbled on a not so hot review, whereas they'd have probably decided different by reading numerous other reviews. But that means buying several hi-fi mags on a regular basis, with the danger of becoming addicted again. The press has often been likened to a double-edged sword. On that score they now have strong competition: The Internet. In both cases the wise reader has the better chance of success. |

I realise this topic is a bit old but I thought you would like to know that I did stumble across "the sound we do" when I was looking to upgrade the awful ear buds that came with my iPod classic. It was reviews that I found on the internet which alerted me to Graham Slee Audio and I am now the very happy owner of a Voyager (and a decent pair of IEMs). Just waiting for my turn at reviewing the Novo and as I indicated in another post saving hard for a Revelation and some interconnects! I don't think Graham, that you should worry too much about the mags, as you rightly point out the internet is a powerful medium. More and more it is becoming the prime source of information on just about any subject you care to name. I am quite certain that the name of Graham Slee Audio is already known to a lot of discerning buyers who like me will not hesitate to recommend you to others. Word of mouth has always been one of the most potent marketing devices. Regards and thanks Les |
