My brother in law has just pulled an old Marantz Ken Ishiwata Reference CD player from his loft and asked me if I understand the benefit of having so much copper on the casework. I don't
Does anyone know if this offers superior shielding or an audible advantage over Aluminium/steel - maybe it is just another audio myth? |

According to one authoritative EMC website, copper and aluminium share almost similar shielding characteristics. However, as copper is far more expensive than aluminium, aluminium is more often used to make products more affordable.
Sometimes a copper 'gasket' is used between power transistors and a heatsink to 'draw' heat into an aluminium heatsink more effectively - however, I am unsure how this works so cannot comment. Copper can be soldered to whereas aluminium cannot be so easily soldered to, and therefore in a multiple grounded product it is easier to 'combine' the board with the case by a number of flying leads or tags. However, this is only possible with thin sheet as anything more bulky would need a blowlamp to heat up... In my opinion it falls into the mythological category. Graham |

Thanks Graham, your first sentence gives me the answer I suspected was coming, probably another ruse to justify a huge price hike over a standard product. Judging by the casework & the amount of copper sheeting all over the Marantz, it probably has a good scrap value
(I bet a copper cased ULDE could sell for a few thousand USD in S E Asia ...but then again you have too much integrity for that) |
