Have just got the AV system finished off with the redundant Onkyo AV amp replaced by a pre-amp, an Audiolab 8200AP. Sold on sound quality rather than processing bells and whistles this minimalist AV pre-amp is just what I was looking for and makes a good partner for the Proprius amps handling the front speakers (PMC GB1i). A little Pro-ject amp box handles the rears (Audica Pro Microlines), and a BK sub completes the system amplification. My Era Gold V is linked in to this (used with a Technics SL7), as is a Squeezebox Transporter, Oppo DVD, Foxsat PVR and Xbox optical output (useful for Lovefilm, iPlayer etc - as well as F1 and FIFA ). Headphone listening is taken care of with a Sudgen Headmaster - which I'd been temporarily using as pre-amp with the Proprii. Something I'd noticed - but don't actually need - is that analogue inputs appear on the digital output courtesy of an ADC. A possible route for digitising vinyl if you have something to hand to send the signal to. . . Gratifyingly music playback is as good as when the sources were connected via the Headmaster, so a good result. I'll be checking the differences between the now-quite-old-DAC in the Transporter and the Audiolab's DAC as it's connected via both analogue and digital cables (short CuSat50s naturally ). Here's pic of the business end of the rack (before final dusting and cable tidying ): |

Another change to the AV setup forced by a non functioning Oppo DVD player was the acquisition of a Blu-ray player with SACD and DVD-A playback. Our first Blu-ray purchase (chosen by my son) was a Marvel comic superhero thing with an explosive soundtrack. The Proprii responded with driving the PMCs to levels that had me fearing for them, with awesome dynamics. 25 watts? And the rest.....

...dangerously tempting is the answer! My front left and right hi-fi speakers are driven by the excellent Proprius amps I bought a few months back.Recently I've been trying one of the loan Proprius amps to power the centre speaker and it does make a difference on voices, music and effects. These sound better with more clarity and more body than the AV amp alone. No shortage of volume in my living room at least. Using the Proprius amp makes dialogue clearer and separates central effects without making foley and ADL too obvious.
