An unbalanced cable cannot reduce noise, and in a way no cable on its own can reduce noise. It can only effectively shield the signal against interference (but some boutique cables are designed to do the opposite).

A balanced cable when used with a balanced audio signal, and delivered into a differentiating input (a balanced input) will reduce noise that could have been induced into the cable.

More on the specifics to follow.

But reading from the comments above, is it really only practical to ballanced cables over a certain distance?
I think the benefits of running balanced cables only become noticeable over a certain length - what that might be I leave to others who are wiser and more informed than myself . . .  Wink
I have heard that beyond 2 meters balanced cable is better.
Is 3 meters ,or even 4, still OK for single ended?
