Hi.
I have recently constructed a Genera pre-amp and I am delighted with it.

The construction was pretty straight forward. I would recommend anyone who is about to make this kit to have a digital multimeter on hand. I needed one to check that I was putting the right resistor in as the resistors are small and I couldn't see the colours with certainty and to check polarity of diodes.
The things that I got wrong were:
1) Initially not inserting the Op-Amp securely into the holder resulting in it popping out.
2) Using  an analogue Ohm meter to check the polarity of the diodes. Some analogue Ohm meters - mine included - are not designed for this and will give the exact wrong answer.
3) Forgot to put the "link" in resulting in only the left channel working.

Anyway, I corrected my errors and I am delighted with the Genera. It replaces the phono preamp board on my Quad 33/303 and the improvement is significant:
  • Snappier percussion.
  • All instruments sounding more clearly like whatever instrument they are. (Sorry about that sentence)
  • More dynamic range (bits that are supposed to be loud are loud)
  • More going on.
  • I can hear the words better.
I also tried it out as a replacement for the phono pre-amp section of a NAD 3020 and that too resulted in a significant improvement.

I am listening to and enjoying music that previously had become a bit over familiar and you can't knock that!

Apologies if I have posted this in the wrong place.

I hope this doesn’t put anyone off. I’ve built two and all I needed was a soldering iron and a magnifying glass.

Maybe it's not just me but as I entered my 50's I have found my workbench light with white fluorescent tube and magnifier very helpful. Definitely easier to confirm the colours on resistors and see markings on small components, I still check the values with an LCR meter even though there is no need with a quality kit like the DAK Genera.
