Hello, a friend of mine would like to mount a Denon DL-103 cartridge on an Audio Linear TD4001 turntable.
I ask if there are incompatibility problems between cartridge and arm.
Thank you.

What tonearm is on the turntable? What is the effective mass?

Although the Denon 103 is popular in many circles, it has a very specific use case. It was designed for heavy, broadcast type tonearms. If that is not what your friend has then they should choose a different cartridge. Denon makes other cartridges that are more suited for common arms.

FWIW I think half the hype around the 103 has to do with it's lower cost relative to many other MC cartridges, but then people end up trying to modify the cartridge to do something it was never designed for. That doesn't make sense to me at all.

My 2 cents.

An arm like that is fairly light - the opposite of what you need for a 103. Your friend should forget about the DL-103.

A DL-301MK2 would be a good alternative. A DL-110 might be okay. AT makes fairly compliant MC cartridges that might be okay as well, e.g. OC9 or AT33 series.

If your friend is okay with non-MC cartridges they can have a look at something like an Ortofon OM series or an AT VM500/700 series cartridge.

But where is the mass of the arm written?

The arm mass is not in the manual. There are estimates online, but I can tell by the design of that arm that it is a low mass or low-medium mass arm. Pretty much any arm with a skinny arm tube and a small integrated headshell like that is that sort of thing. It is very obvious once you've handled a few of these types of arms. I used to have a Yamaha turntable with a similar type of arm and have handled a bunch of old Japanese turntables with skinny arms like that. That sort of design was very common in the early 80s.

It would not surprise me if that arm was around 10g, give or take. Unfortunately trying to measure the arm's mass involves taking it apart and doing a bunch of measurements of various parts - so not practical for most people. A hifi magazine from the 80s may have measured that arm.

Here is a snippet from the brochure for the Luxman P-272 turntable. This turntable came with a Luxman TA-1 arm. Note it says the arm was designed for high compliance cartridges.

High compliance cartridge = low mass tonearm for an optimal match.

Again, AVOID the Denon 103.
