Hi,
Saw a post in review by Michael Fremer on the Accession MM that the Bob’s Devices SUTs work really well with the Accession MM. Has anyone had experience in this area?

I'm using a Rothwell MCX (1:10) SUT with Accession M, cartridge is Audio Technica Art-9XI. So far, very happy with the gain, normally I set at 10 o'clock for my listening via Stax headphones.

I acquired a Denon AU-250 step-up transformer and connected it to my Accession MM and my arm cable to the AU-250 and powered everything up and nothing bad happened.
I don't have a suitable cartridge to test this set-up further however. I think there might be a great orthodoxy of cartridge matching thought locked up in a false SUT vs. Active Head Amp dichotomy, but i'm not sure. i can attest only that it's safe to a limited extent to connect a step up transformer to Accession MM.

You are right there is an orthodoxy or rather calculations for stepping up the MC voltage to MM levels (turns/gain ratio) whilst matching the impedance (turns ratio squared) so it depends on the cartridge and SUT. Without knowing your cartridge I can't tell if will work well or sound boring/safe. Sorry to be pedantic but choosing between an SUT and a head amp is a dichotomy as it is two distinct options.

I couldn't find the spec for the AU-250 but lets imagine its gain is 10x. If so the cartridge would see 470 ohms loading, 47k / 100. If that was too high a 12k resistor could be added in parallel to the preamp input to give the cartridge 100 ohms loading.

Jon,
You're spot on, the Denon AU-250 gain is 10x Update: I got hold of a Denon DL103 and played it through this SUT and my Accession MM and it sounds wonderful. I think I've found my perfect cartridge/ phono preamp combination. Do SUT's work well with the Accession MM? In this instance and my experience, Yes! |
