There have been some very significant developments in single board computers last year and this year. They are quickly becoming viable alternatives to desktop computer, especially as some are able to run Windows 10. With the addition of the PCIe interface for Raspberry Pi as well as the preservation of the 40-pin GPIO interface and much more convenient power supply than desktop PCs, this is certainly the way forward for an optimised audio computer.

The next challenge is multiroom. Not sure why I'm doing all this I have Sonos in 5 rooms. It must be the challenge.

I must say that I'm not just enthusiastic about the most recent developments in single board computers, I am actually very excited. They can be built exactly to my needs and have a compact form factor.

Hi Ash,
Came across a company called Stack Audio going down a Google search rabbit hole. Check out their Link II. Maybe of interest. 30 day trial too. If it’s crap send it back.

Thanks, I will have a look. I've been looking at Hackboard 2 and RPi CM4 with I/O board, amongst others. I've even ventured over to the dark side today and looked at Apple's latest Mac products.
SBCs are best for audio though as I can implement 5V/3.3V and 12V linear PSUs. With PCIe ×1 and 40-pin GPIO on the board, I can connect both JCAT USB card XE and Digione Signature to produce a fantastic digital transport that I can potentially use as a PC too. I will have to experiment with different operating systems as software will inevitably have a big effect on sound quality as well.
