having fallen into the rabbithole of the cdr scene of 2005 to 2015 i now have a lot of cds made at home by musicians in all manner of packaging from plastic wallets to card sleeves to envelopes and beyond - basically anything but a jewel case.

Should these be transferred over to jewel cases to protect them or are they fine in the myriad of different packaging they came in?

Having not bought a cd for 20 years I have no idea. Definitely not a lover of jewel cases but ive seen enough examples of records damaged by outgassing to be suspicious of such things

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Craig

CDRs have a limited life as far as I can remember.
It will be worth looking into, and possibly ripping the CDs to file based audio.

yes ripping them and  copying or bluetoothing them is going to be the best solution and if the original cdrs fall apart then they fall apart.

Now people seem to use lathecut rather than cdrs and im not sure how much play you get out of those either but thankfully thats someone elses problem

I've got CDR's that were in jewel cases and have deteriorated to give errors when re-ripped a few years ago as lossless. I have kept the early rips and the new ones. Fine till the disk drive gets gnarly. Nothing lasts forever but I have old LP's that still sound good.

Thats interesting they failed even in jewel cases.

Its hardly the arc of the covenant but it does seem a shame that a whole decade or so of music is on such a possibly fragile medium.

I only pick them up for a few £ a go as people dump their CDs. The format of choice for a laptop, an oboe through a tape delay, and a bowed gong recorded in someones basement

Any time I receive a CDR release from an independent/DIY musician I immediately back it up now using EAC or dBPoweramp. It's just too unsound of a medium to rely on for long-term storage. I learned the hard way a few times.

Nowadays most musicians still using the format typically have a Bandcamp page and will offer a lossless format download with the CDR so you get a back up right away. I should mention I really don't like the CDR format but for small pressing runs it is unavoidable.

The worst ones were the type with home-printed stick-on labels as they never seemed to rip without error. I have one of those from a deep house producer that made a DJ mix of his productions. I even tried to contact him about purchasing a download as he is still active but no dice. Maybe he'll put it on Bandcamp eventually.
