Warning you may disagree with the musical opinions expressed..
....... but you would be sadly misguided Wink

Its that time of year again, a much needed cash injection for independent record stores.

However while pouring over this years release list I am left wonder how much the idea has been tainted by commercialism, both by the record companies and the buyers.

A number of times now I have been standing patiently in line at Piccadilly records in Manchester waiting to buy that release I wanted and then the store to announce  that is sold out, yet I have already seen some scumbag is selling a copy on Ebay in the Manchester Area at an inflated price. Of course this is not a criticism of Piccadilly records (or any store) who have a policy of not selling more than one copy of a record to a person. Yet even if they know who is doing it,  it is difficult to stop them, at the end of the day it is still as sale to them. (N.B scumbags live everywhere not just Manchester where I live)

Will just add that I am not dissing Piccadilly Records here who do try their best to combat the scumbags and put on a great days worth of events on RSD.

See the below link for Paul Wellers decision to pull out of record store day and the response.

https://www.nme.com/news/music/paul-weller-30-1229600

While I am on the side of record shops here , I have come across a story of a record shop that has been struck off the the RSD list for selling Paul Weller records online just before the start of RSD, not substantiated yet.

Then we have the naked commercialism of the record companies. What started out as an opportunity to find some rare gems not previously released has turned into what seems like a way of making some money out of some dusty old crap  that nobody dared release at the time, dodgy live recordings or the latest thing I have noticed soundtracks to less than spectacular films.

Now I know that film sound tracks can be items of merit such  Get Carter (actually on RSD release this year!!) , Zulu , any John Barrie or Morricone sound track or interesting compilations such as Baby Driver ( the film is edited to the sound track) , Guardians of the Galaxy or Pulp Fiction.

However this year we have the Soundtrack to Coneheads, a less than stellar film , a mediocre track list full of unconvincing covers (ignore Tainted love for sake of argument) , this ain't no Blues Brothers. We also have Mad Max 2 soundtrack, I know its by Brian May , but really, this thing has not dated well. The Faculty, I know this is a Robert Rodriguez film and I have referenced some compilation soundtracks above but this another example of a forgettable track list. Howard Stern's Private Parts ... just WTF?

Live stuff... maybe I am too young and not spaced out when I listened but I have heard nothing from Woodstock sonically of merit except for Sly and the Family Stone ( RSD release this year) yet releases are still pushed out. The Rolling Stones live in 2017, I don't listen to any of their albums after about 1979, never mind listening to them mangling anything I may like 40 years later.

Then there is the section I refer to as WTF? or WTF? (who or what).
This year we Europe (an argument for Brexit) , DEF leopard (yawn)  Brigitte Bardot seeming advertised solely on the gate fold picture and a whole bunch of stuff I have never heard of who I could not be bothered to google about. However this all pales insignificance  to the blatant cashing in of the the Justin Beiber releases in 2016 Censored.... really Censored, which soulless executive mind control 'genius' came up with that.

But... I have an addiction and I publicly acknowledge it, I have already chosen what I will be attempting to buy, the never before on vinyl releases, the out of prints, the I've never hear of them before (Wink) and the interesting sub genre Various artists compilations that get released. I will , holiday permitting, be queuing up praying the touts don't get there first and then revisiting in the following days to hoover up any missed delights.

I've been a keen supporter of RSD almost since the beginning but I must say it has lost a lot of the original appeal, partly due to reasons Steve mentions above.

As it's become more popular, the need to arrive earlier each year to stand a chance of getting the titles I want has become increasingly tedious. Only 3 years ago I could arrive by 1am to be within the first two or three people in the queue. Last time it was midnight and I was 17th, my friend at 8pm Friday was still only third!

It also happens that some of the titles I have queued for have either been reissued later on or sold online close to the original price & as I buy only to listen, rarity or resale value has no appeal.

The few titles I am interested in this year do not justify spending Friday afternoon or early evening to almost guarantee purchase so for me sadly RSD has reached the end of the road. I still support brick and mortar record stores whenever possible though.
Older than I once was, younger than I'll be

I agree with you guys. I don’t care to queue for anything and I’m not going to stand in line on RSD with the hope that I can snag the one copy the store has. Or even better, they don’t have a copy at all.

Our local record store offers the remaining RSD releases for sale on the Monday after RSD online or in store. I’m always able to pick up a couple of titles.

Long lines and crowded stores are not for me. The only time I ever stood in line was a few years ago when I happened to be in a smaller town for RSD. People only lined up 15 minutes before the shop opened and there were probably less than 10 people in line. I got all the releases I wanted that day.

Since then I just pick up RSD releases (if there is anything I want) well after RSD, often weeks or months later, sometimes a year later or more. A couple stores in my area often wind up with way too much RSD stock after RSD is over, which they then mark down.

The other thing is I don't "need" everything "on vinyl". If the album is available on CD or lossless digital, I'm fine with missing out on an artificially limited LP. Many of these RSD releases aren't great quality anyway.

I've been disappointed by some of the RSD releases, as well as some of the vinyl reissues I've purchased. I also still buy CDs, but I find myself leaning more towards SACDs, if available.

Although, I have downloaded many lossless digital files, I have yet to branch out into integrating any kind of DAC or music player into my system. I guess that is a discussion for another forum, as I don't know where to begin.

I have followed RSD for the first 2/3 years after returning to vinyl. Then I lost interest: I prefer normal editions of a good quality that are made available everywhere, and without scalping.

...and I did Embarrassed

Handy hint for those near MCR, before queuing up for hours at Piccadilly records try Eastern Bloc and Vinyl Exchange as they had very much smaller queues (if at all), I missed out on the Yazoo release not trying Vinyl Exchange before the guys in front of me in the PR Queue sent a scout there.

Did my hoovering up at Revo records in Halifax.
