If a counterweight is far back (for the required VTF) the arm will "see-saw" by a larger degree. Similar to long travel suspension on vehicles. To place the counterweight closer to the pivot will increase VTF greatly, and so to bring it back to the correct downforce requires additional mass (a lump of blutack). Reduction in travel might shift the frequency upward and away from the subsonic groove modulations which would seem to exist on these records. Apologies if this sounds non-technical.

If the speaker drive unit is not reaching the stops, and high compliance drivers are supposed to be long travel, then it's just fear that's unfounded.
