If a counterweight is far back (for the required VTF) the arm will "see-saw" by a larger degree. Similar to long travel suspension on vehicles. To place the counterweight closer to the pivot will increase VTF greatly, and so to bring it back to the correct downforce requires additional mass (a lump of blutack). Reduction in travel might shift the frequency upward and away from the subsonic groove modulations which would seem to exist on these records. Apologies if this sounds non-technical.

If the speaker drive unit is not reaching the stops, and high compliance drivers are supposed to be long travel, then it's just fear that's unfounded.

Too much stuff stops it being a port. When you fill the ports completely the cabinet becomes a closed box, which will stop the woofers flapping. If you part fill them either with something air can get through or by only blocking part of the hole, it is a little harder to predict the result.

I think they've said it different ways. Adding headshell weight even temporarily with a small coin or some blutac is like increasing the cartridge weight. It will alter the resonance frequency of the tonearm and cartridge, the aim is to get this between 8 and 11 Hertz which can be measured with a test record or just by seeing if the cone flapping reduces. Remember to adjust the counterweight to allow for the extra weight.

Wow so much great advice. Thank you all. And of course now the follow up questions:
-How does one balance the ports' need to breathe with stuffing "stuff" inside, whether cedar soaked wool or socks? What's the risk of "too much stuff?"
-Seems like Bruce and Graham are suggesting opposite approaches to the weight suggestion if I understand them correctly. Is that right?

The electronics cannot predict the compliance of the mechanical products they are used with. Should we filter down particular frequencies just in case? The European IEC modified RIAA replay curve reckons so. But how can it be high fidelity when the inverse doesn't happen in record manufacture (for if it did we'd be back to square one).

This being a European TT, cart and arm, most likely designed for the preamp also on offer, possibly featuring the modified curve? Perhaps therefore made to be a little bit springy (the arm that is) to compensate?

Wouldn't references (as in starting places and not opinion) be great? Wink

One could stick a small blob of bluetack to the counterweight and readjust its VTF, bringing the counterweight closer to the pivot and increasing the resonant frequency... out of harms way... maybe...

(by springy I didn't mean flexing)

Yes...the ports need to breath freely!

Spray them with cedar oil and run before the socks catch fire!
