Hey, the arm manufactuers - they're not listening. They never will!

Carbon fiber is supposedly good for school science projects...I may consider gifting the tonearm to my young one
This discussion points me to something different to try....shielded tonearm, MM cart. And they said people listening to old time music are boring and never change Thanks for the education Shashi

Thanks Graham, I may try 10nF or a pair of 4n7's. I am going to try the change to tonearm as shield/return soon.

It might be thought that this topic has overly concentrated on interference (EMC) but its effect on the sound is worth our interest.
It all depends on whether we care what it does, and if the rest of the system is capable of exposing its effect. A system of very honest equipment will expose the effect of interference as dry and uninspiring or falsely bright, but, and this is my personal opinion, some hi-fi products are designed to mask the real sound and produce a different version of it. Actually that was also the personal opinion of the late Peter Walker of Quad fame. Another designer was quite enthusiastic about adding musical sounding distortion. It has to be faced that a lot of hi-fi equipment is not high fidelity, and therefore you might never hear the effect I'm talking about. To paraphrase Martin Luther King Jr.: I have heard the promised sound but you may not get there with me. I will continue to do my level best to prevent interference placing its awful signature on otherwise great sound even if the interest in me doing so is only shared by a minority. |

Was this to say he believed his products masked or others did? I attended a Quad Demo in Hull many years ago with a pair of stacked ELS63 - I think just after the 405 came out - which sounded pretty good - when they took out the high filter!!!! Peter stated that the 303 and 405 sounded exactly the same other than the latter had more power; a relative had a 33/303 at the time and we knew some of their shortcomings should we say.

Graham I am unsure; My amp and CD player have 'firmware' as they call it which it is possible to upgrade when sent back to the factory - I am unsure what precisely it controls but two phono stages I noticed appeared to perhaps have some form of software in play and didn't know whether this software was used as part of the circuitry or not which if it was perhaps was a work around form the dwindling components you have outlined recently. One was a L***a Agenda and the other A***o R******h Reference 10.

Peter Walker's designs were from a different age and so was the music often played on them. I was only stating an opinion. But as for the 303 and 405 sounding the same? Probably at near full output, but the class-A to class-B transition must have been very obvious at lower levels - I'm talking about the 'current dumping'.
