I have just returned from a long holiday in the USA and as we will be repeating this several times a year I have to accept a different type of listening when away for so long. On a long haul flight, FLACs via the Bitzie sound great but once with my Daughters family, headphones become mostly impractical (& selfish!). So for 6 weeks I have been listening to their much more humble setup - music was playing almost all the time & we went to a festival & several live gigs too.
They have one of my older turntables feeding into a large Marshall Woburn speaker but with two cats & a lively 16 month old, vinyl rarely gets played. It's also a Bluetooth device so the son in law streams 256k AAC music from Apple Music and I must say that this sounds surprisingly pleasant - I guess 'gigantic' American living spaces help in this respect. I was also able to hook the Bitzie up directly & the change in quality was noticeable even though it's still a long way from 'hifi'. Now the surprising bit... They run a number of Air BnB's as a business and in several of these they have a House of Marley Chant Mini Bluetooth speaker - a tiny little thing which somehow manages to sound warm/full at medium-low volumes with quite a nice tone for something so diminutive, no deep bass but nicely voiced. I admit to being quite impressed on the occasions we helped with the cleaning and many of their guests seemed so as well. Another surprise - my son in law also uses Bluetooth headphones (Marley Smile) with his iPhone and when I paired these with FLACs from my phone they are also very listenable. I expected a very compromised frequency range but this wasn't so - maybe age is affecting my hearing? Nevertheless I intend to get a pair for walks into town etc, the convenience of having no wires is a bonus. So what I am saying is that although it's great to be back to my own system, I realise I have had a lot of fun listening more to music for its own sake than I have for a long time. I have also discovered a load of great new artists, mostly in the electronic/dub/ambient genre which the family like so much. I have enjoyed this 'simple listening' every bit as much as high end stuff at home and that has to be a good thing, doesn't it? ...please don't expel me from the forum Edited by Drewan77 - 03 Aug 2017 at 3:38pm |

Know what you mean on this. When I've been away I love hearing my music on my system again but enjoy the music I hear on my travels. That can be in cafes and bars, family and friends' homes.

I must say that I'm much the same. My tastes in music inspired me to buy in high fidelity sound equipment so I could appreciate it even more. But I can still appreciate great music out of my laptop speakers or from my Dad's cheap radio. The source material is always the most important determinant of enjoyment , for me. I stopped listening to music with high fidelity headphones a couple of years ago now. I only have one K1000 these days and I may even sell that eventually. My enjoyment hasn't reduced and it has been nice listening simply for a while.

Agreed here, too!
In the car or through the little portable stereo at work, music is music and I enjoy all of it. I suppose the difference is that when I'm at home in front of the "big system", I deliberately listen far more intently to every nauance of phrasing I can. I love getting deeper inside what the artists do to be so expressive. They're the details I don't get in other listening, for sure. However, listening through other means is more about the overall vibe and groove and that still keeps me happy. Mick. |

I come from a background of listening to video game music, which is mostly computer-generated sounds. As long as it is well mastered and the speakers aren't harshly bright or obnoxiously boomy at low to moderate volume, I can be happy listening with almost anything. I listen to the music composition; if the playback equipment compliments its reproduction, even better.

I was reading a article in a HiFi mag it was on about HiFi software but the start was a good one so I thought I'd share it with you.
The world of HiFi used to be relatively simple a couple of decades ago. For consumers and manufacturers, it was predominantly hardware driven. You bought an all-in-one system or kitted out a rack full of separates, fed them a CD. tape or record, and hit play. Your biggest problem was a scratched CD, a chewed-up cassette or the cat taking a swipe at your turntable's tonearm.

You are right to note this. Now it's whether the internet/wi-fi is working, auto-updates that start running when you could be listening to music, apps that no longer work, etc. The there's galloping inflation and an appalling war in Ukraine to think about too...
