Hi Graham,
The SPDIF Pi hat can have a separate power supply to that of the RPi. Would a linear supply for this area make much difference?
There are 10 kinds of people. Those who understand binary and those who don't.

The HifiBerry Digi+ Pro Hat can be powered independently of the Pi, either 5V or, for earlier versions, with a little soldering/desoldering 3.3V direct to the digital output section.
This was the reason for my original request that the PSU be dual output of 5V and 3.3V.

Ian
Just listen, if it sounds good to you, enjoy it.

I have been reading and watching about the various Raspberry Pi possibilities with audio streaming as I slowly begin to learn more about the subject. For example:

Especially this ALLO DigiOne Signature product that is intended to be a no-compromise S/PDIF HAT for the Raspberry Pi and get the maximum signal fidelity from the CPU to the external DAC. They talk about separating the "clean" board from the "dirty" board which is where I stop understanding it really because the "dirty" board is still the origin of the signal so having a separate power supply for the "clean" board is surely not going to prevent digital errors from being carried forward... Confused

They suggest the "clean" board will benefit from being powered with batteries, for reduced noise or ripple current??

In my defense, I was on the verge of calling it out as BS.

These notes can help in understanding single rail supplies made "clean" for some circuit block or another: https://www.hifisystemcomponents.com/forum/1970s-design-indulgence_topic4543_post62924.html#62924

They (Allo) don't exactly keep the details of their implementation secret, and it's based on engineering, not audio-quackery, so I don't see why they deserve a bashing.

Why not have a listen before calling it BS? You might be surprised. I was.
