My USB and S/PDIF cards and Pi4B-Pi2AES Lite transport are on hold for the moment whilst I finish transitioning from MySphere 3.1 to Mark Audio speakers. I am really pleased with the Tozzi Two and CHP-90 drivers and have the CHR-90 and CHR-120 for comparison and deep bass respectively. Speakers provide more spatial information so I wish to use them, not headphones, for critical listening of transports and computers. Sound differences may be very subtle and may barely be heard without extended speaker listening to identify them objectively. The ability to project a sense of space is an important quality to be compared so once I've got a precise 20-80Hz alongside my Tozzi Two, I shall return to the transports. I want to have a look at RISC-V single board computers too.

Morning Ash,
Was the investment in the USB card worth it, or have you now moved on to other things? |

Lossy boxes also release the back pressure by flexing, damping the resonant peak. Even so you can work out alpha as about 1.5 for the closed box which gives you Fb and Qtc.

CHR-120 spec says Vas is 58.89 litres. F0 is 34Hz.
Yes, lossy boxes help to ensure the direct sound dominates over omnidirectional emittance. For a small room and plenty of power availability, it better suits my expectations. My next cardboard box speakers will look far better than my previous attempts. There aren't a lot of speaker drivers that can mechanically achieve deep bass, mids and highs up to 20kHz all from a single 12g diaphragm.

They will be 'lossy boxes' which may help. 42 litres is quite a big enclosure, what is the Vas of your CHR-120's please Ash?

Have received the order of twenty plain double-walled cardboard boxes. 457mm x 305mm x 305mm so about 42 litre air capacity. Depending on how I fold the sides (top and bottom), I can create a totally sealed box or I can create air gaps/holes/slots/vents, either front or rear facing, to alter the pressure loading behind the driver/s. I could even cut away some/all of the rear face.
I may try mounting the driver inside the box so that only its diaphragm is visible through a hole cut in the cardboard. I could try attaching sheet metal to the box exterior to add strength and improve appearance. I'm curious how low the CHR-120 woofer can go inside a box of these dimensions. What I like acoustically about cardboard compared to timber is the low mass and the damping; it doesn't store a lot of vibrational energy and then re-emit it in all directions like wood. You don't need to use acoustic foam inside or underneath the enclosure as it is already self-damping. If I want to reduce the internal volume, I can tape cardboard sheets inside to partition the chambers. With Slee electronics and MA drivers like the CHP-90, CHR-90 or CHR-120, these speakers in cardboard boxes will sound just as good as any professional speaker. The CHP-90 should certainly be suitable as monitor speakers as the frequency response is exceptionally flat and the bass extension should be extraordinary for the size. Or the Tozzi Two speakers alongside a low-pass pair of CHR-120 could be my full-range solution; this would be my replacement for MySphere 3.1 as it would be full bandwidth, low moving mass and simple to achieve a flat response.
