Having used my VP cleaner for a couple of years now and having cleaned my vinyl with a USM I was a little surprised to see dust on both the cantilever and on the front plate and around the visible coils on my dynavector.
Whilst I cannot say whether any impact on the sound I did brush away the majority of what could be seen carefully with a soft stylus brush so now under microscope looks visibly quite clean again. Neither the USM or VP cleaner appears to have prevented this so will resort to periodic spring clean. |

I typically use a 2+2 record brush before and after each LP side.
For the stylus, Magic Eraser at the start and end of a session and maybe once a month, a quick dip into an Onzow Zerodust.
If i get any tracking problems i wash the LP using a centrifugal record cleaner. |

I was looking into wet cleaners for cleaning the stylus but there seems a lot of people that don't recommendit, something to do with how the needle is attached, someone did say that Ortofon says you shouldn't use a wet clean on their stylus, I couldn't verify this. I use a combination of, Onzow before the first play and then a brush from then on (after each side) A mate did say that he has noticed a build up of dirt at the top end of his needle when using Onzow only so he said that what I'm doing is probably a good thing. One thing I have seen is a ultrasonic stylus cleaning M/C as anyone come across this or use one. The bit I said about Ortofon I may have read this in the past but I can't find it now.

I think Ortofon used to sell an ultrasonic stylus cleaner that used a wet cleaning fluid as I own one! That said I use one of those gel pads, mine is a Vinyl Passion dust buster.

Audio Technica make and sell a stylus cleaning fluid, and it works great when you have some crud on the stylus that just refuses to shift by using other means.
