The worst part of it is that when it breaks off (which it basically does on the very first removal of the guard) your heart is sure to skip a beat or two as you'll be deathly scared you've just wrecked your brand new £450 stylus. Happened to me twice! Luckily the stylus was untouched on both occasions.

hmm. Must be just that range? the Kontrapunkts/Quintets have pretty decent guards. The Transfiguration one is also awful, more likely to snap the cantilever trying to get it on/off than leaving it exposed. I was truly terrified trying to get the b****r off for the 1st time. Now it's staying off.

Good to hear that Graham has revisited the 2M Black as this is a very nice cartridge
Yes, these stylus guards are very weak. However I found that a thin strip of blue-tac, pressed across the gap where the clip snapped off means they can continue in use if fitted carefully. I have been doing this without incident when swapping both a 2M Black and Blue stylus for the past couple of years |

I think this is a case of once bitten . . .
I had a 'Budget' AT Moving coil a few years ago which was flying naked with no guard in place. To this day I never knew how it happend but when I can to use it one day I found a detached shank on the base of my deck (amzaing how small they look when not attached to the cartridge!). Since spending rather more on my Dynavector XX2-2 I now routinely slide off the guard and replace after use. My nervousness has subsided with familiarily of use and whilst I don't have either young kids or animals around prefer to keep protected, a good eyesight and a steady hand are a must though!!! I suppose the location of the deck is key (mine is well shielded anyway) and whilst a movable guard is no dount not good for sonics catrgidge manufactuers could be a little more thoughtfull, after all I am sure they wouldn't want a customer having to buy another cartridge from them would they? My 2M mono guard has arrived - a clear plastic version.
I'll let you know how I get on with it over time, and see if it lasts longer than the black one did. |
