Introducing the all new NOVO Discrete Headphone Amplifier

After a years research and development the new Novo discrete headphone amp is going through its final prototyping and pre-production process.

Discrete means exactly what it says: All amplification is by discrete bipolar transistors.

Output is similar to the more expensive Solo.

What's that? This discrete costs less than a Solo? That's right!

Whereas some could try to extort maximum monetary gain out of the description "discrete", we decided to equate discrete with the saving it represents. OK, the design was pure hard work, plus the configuration is truly innovative using an output impedance reduction network (making characteristic differences between headphones less obvious...Approve)..., but no: there are a lot of guys and gals out there who don't aspire to high-end spending, and this truly awesome sounding design is for them!

Similarly proportioned to a Solo, this one's not quite as long (front to back) and the case is lighter in weight, but it's still anodized aluminium (only in silver at this price).

Only one (stereo) input though, but with a "chained" line output making it a doddle to "insert" in the system of things (2 sets of gold plated RCA jacks).

The Novo gets its power from one of those new fangled "GREEN" switched mode power supplies "the size of a Wren". For those who's hearing goes as high as a dog this may not suit, because like energy saving light bulbs, these do emit a little bit of ultra-sonic sound, but for the majority this won't be an issue. We can offer the PSU1 power supply instead at the PSU1 power supply price that is.

So what's the bottom line?

£200! (plus VAT or whatever tax system operates in your country).

Yes, 200 Great British Pounds (GBP) only!

Next question: WHEN?

That all depends on how quickly our UK subcontractors can get the PCB's and panel metalwork to us, but orders are being placed on them next week. There is a strong possibility the Novo will be on sale by the end of August (2008).

There will be some "beta" models going to various interest groups (the likes of Head-Fi UK and USA) so if I haven't already convinced you to place your advance order, look for the feedback on the other forums.

What about a photo? Go on then: I'll take some snappy snaps of the final prototype but it will not feature the printed panels yet - keep your eyes peeled for this soon.

Any questions? Or do you just want to order one now? Tongue

I'm doing some Beta models for known members here and if the Rockgrotto crew want to join in I'll be pleased if they'll come along and answer me on this thread and post their thoughts at the Grotto.

Hug

Best wishes,
Graham

Although I am currently more into valves, I certainly look forward to a new GSP amp design.

Here's a sneak preview of under the bonnet of the new Novo headphone amp showing no op-amp at all! Just some nice tiny transistors providing a very low output impedance and capable of driving low impedance and high impedance cans to Solo sound levels. Inherently short circuit proof too!

Double take on the above: 1] Low output impedance 2]Tiny transistors! Doesn't make sense at all does it?

But it works!

That's innovative!
