Hi Fritz,
I've not had the pleasure of each of the cartridges you mention, but the cheaper versions of the 540 and VMS 30 are very good indeed. I still have a VMS20EII, but I don't use it much because I'm scared I'll wear it out. I have tried passive, active, and combinations of RIAA equalisation - even an "instrumentation amp triple" which had a balanced input! Yes, balanced - and that was back in 1991! Before the bandwagon even got a whiff of it (I had to rewire a Roksan arm plug to do it). In fact, I think it was that one which did some fantastic stereo positioning, but it was after I'd made the input quasi-balanced to revert to conventional arm wiring. It seems I'd unwittingly produced a stereo width expander by doing so, very similar to the Haffler idea of placing a 1 Ohm resistor in the rear wall speaker return path.... However, since I discovered the ability to do high speed active EQ, which gets round the old propagation delay problem that used to plague active EQ in the past, I never looked back. And with the right high speed op-amp, the soundstage opens up that big it's hard to believe (hey, I'm getting carried away here - they'll think I'm being a salesman ) I recently rediscovered a discrete active stage idea from way beck when, and I'm tempted to see (hear) if that's as good as the op-amps. |

Hi FritzS,
Nice link, ich habe es mit viel spass gelesen, I did add the AAAnalog link to my favourites.
Those guys are very complimenting and very explicit about the GSP phonoamps soundquality.
I feel the same way, but with less experience on other brands/models.
The remark on the powercords also is a nice one, maybe I'll..... Your own stockhammerwebsite is nice reading too.
Have fun Han.

Hi,
after some deliberations, searching in forums, posting some questions and read answers (in German HiFi forums too) I ordered one "green" Reflex MM too strangely - in German HiFi forums Reflex highly commended - more than german products Edited by FritzS - 08 Feb 2008 at 12:28pm |
