I am not an expert on Stearns discography but have a few of his albums. Encounter (1988) and Planetary Unfolding (1981) are considered classics of the ambient electronic genre and would be worth checking if you haven't heard them. Those albums should be on Bandcamp and most streaming platforms.

At one point, maybe around ten years ago, there was a whole scene of neo soul type acts in the U.S....Labels like Gemco, Colemine, Daptone, and some others...a friend of mine was really into this stuff but I don't know a lot about it. Years back he recorded an entire DJ mix of the stuff.
