No dig at you, but really? Listen to Heart of the Sunrise on the left hand channel only! It's a joke This seems to be a typical bit of Eddie Offord ping-pong stereo "engineering"... I also once read that he used to sit there with all the peak recording meter needles stuck on their end stops, except I haven't been able to google-it to confirm the story. Perhaps that's why Wakeman's "Cans and Brahms" solo is so utterly distorted? Emerson Lake and Palmer were so "impressed" with him they did a song about him... Are you ready, Eddie, to turn out rock-and-roll? [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Are you ready, Eddie, ready to rock-and-roll? [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Are you ready, Eddie, to give me some of your soul? [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Are you ready, Eddie, to pull those faders down? [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Are you ready, Eddie, to pull those faders down? [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Are you ready, Eddie, to turn your scully round? [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Are you ready, Eddie, to pull those faders down? [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Are you ready, Eddie, to pull those faders down? [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Are you ready, Eddie, to turn your scully round? [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Well, are you ready, Eddie, to turn your sixteen tracks on? [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Are you ready, Eddie, with your sixteen tracks? [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Are you ready, Eddie? A bit of vibing is all it lacks. [Eddie edit, Eddie, Eddie edit] Well, vibe me Eddie, vibe me all night long? [Vibe me, Eddie, Vibe me, vibe me, Eddie] Vibe me, Eddie, vibe me all night long. [Vibe me, Eddie, Vibe me, vibe me, Eddie] While you're vibing me, Eddie, nothing can go wrong. [Vibe me, Eddie, Vibe me, vibe me, Eddie] And on the fade down they ask him "ham or cheese?" I believe the emphasis is on "nothing can go wrong" (meaning it did) and "cheese" could refer to the end result - IMO (pulling faders down on some desks means maximum gain...) Maybe it isn't an original press then. I'm no expert about these things but the bloke in the record store said it was and I believed that since the look and feel was very early 70's with the thick cardboard gatefold. It was stupid to write that it was an original press without anything solid to back it up with.
Also when I examined it again the record wasn't that thick after all, just standard. However it still sounds very good and as for Heart of the snrise I couldn't hear any problems with it. The copy sounded even better, I suspect, as I played it just after a newly remastered "audiophile" pressing of Close to the edge which was absolute . It was done by "Friday music", never heard of them before and never buying any of their records again. |

Funny thing though,
I'm still planning on getting my hands on a copy of the Analogue Productions pressing of Fragile, from 2006 I think, as I got hold of a high-res needledrop of it which sounds better than any analog or digital copy I've ever heard before. And the needledrop in question was made using your Gram amp 2 special |

I played Stanley Clarke's "If this bass could only talk" yesterday. Well produced jazz funk and I was struck by how much clearer the opening and closing tracks of bass and tap dancing are with the Reflex M. It is fun to listen to and the different reverb/echoes are revealed.

I suppose it could be that my copy is a bad pressing, but having heard other Eddy Offord engineered offerings I must have a collection of badly pressed records.... As for Close to the Edge, such a wonderful piece ruined beyond imagination by some , and that was the original from the 70's! |
