Today's pick is Dance with Death by Andrew Hill. Another great album from the Blue Note Tone Poet Series.

Last few days have been quite mono-thematical... Mostly these two albums, on repeat. The Depeche Mode one blows the CD version, with more than TWICE the dynamic range (CD has a DR of 4!!!!!!!!).

I've been meaning to pick up the B&S album but haven't yet. Not sure I will get the DM album. I am a fan but haven't really paid attention to their last few studio albums. The last new album from them I really loved was Playing the Angel which I have on both LP and CD.

RE: the dynamic range thing, it's pretty much impossible to get an accurate reading on a digital needledrop of a vinyl record. The only way to know the dynamic range of the master used to cut the vinyl, is to have access to that master. A few indie labels have released such things digitally but it's rare for a big name band signed to a major label to do so.

Yes, I know that! But even by ear, the vinyl version is better. You can definitely hear it's not as brickwalled as the CD. The album is OK, better than the previous two or three ones, but no huge hits. Certainly not as good as PTA. But I love Depeche anyway.

The B&S is excellent too. I have the light blue pressing and it's excellent. And the album is a surprise, even better than "A bit of previous"!

Yeah, it's entirely possible the vinyl sounds subjectively better, just hard to quantify things with dynamic range. I'll have to check out some songs from the album and decide if I need it. PTA is hard to top and is easily one of my 3 favorites by the band.

I haven't decided what format or version I will buy for the B&S album. Over here in the U.S., we get stuck with GZ pressings and GZ in-house cuts, so I might pass on the vinyl and get the CD version instead. I did like "Previous" more than "Human Problems". I thought the production on "Human" sounded terrible and just fell flat for me. Those songs sounded much better live when I saw the band. I'd like to go see them again sometime.

Today's pick is Gone to Earth by David Sylvian. My copy is the 1986 U.S. pressing on Virgin Records. I really need to get a copy of this on CD that features the full album.
