Nigeria from Grant Green is a great record. If you appreciate Grant Green, this one is a must have. It also feature one of my favorite jazz drummer Art Blakey.

I haven't heard the latest LP reissue but I have this album on a double CD set with some other material (2 albums worth) from the same sessions. Great stuff, and almost anything by GG is worth checking out.

Maybe I missed it in all the great previous posts but how about

Duke Ellington Masterpieces?

That's a great album. Also kind of historic I think in that it's one of the earlier magnetic tape recordings.

I wouldn't pretend to know enough about jazz to know true essentials, but here are a few of my favourites:

Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - Moanin', The Big Beat, Free for All, A Night in Tunisia
Kenny Burrell - Midnight Blue
Grant Green - Idle Moments, Matador
Oscar Peterson - We Get Requests
Thelonius Monk - Solo Monk
Mingus - Ah Um, Mingus at Antibes, Let My Children Hear Music, (ok, anything by Mingus)
Lee Morgan - Candy, Search for the New Land
Kenny Dorham - Quiet Kenny, Una Mas

P******t Debut Carbon, Goldring 1042, GS Accession MM w/Enigma, GS Solo ULDE w/PSU1, Sennheiser HD6XX, Technics SU-800 IA, Castle Knight 1, PS Audio Ultimate Outlet, Lautus & CuSat50

Also good to see some love for Search For The New Land - while The Sidewinder is the template Blue Note Lee Morgan LP (and arguably the template Blue Note LP tout court), SFTNL is arguably even more satisfying IMHO....
