Hi. Michael Fremer, the Analog Guru of Stereophile and Analog Planet fame, has conducted a blind test between 8 MM phono preamps, ranging from US$ 399 to 4.500.
The winner? The Era Gold V (old model !!!) with the horizontal and vertical lettering on the front. Here is the link: Thanks again, Graham, for your incredible know-how and insightful and brilliant work. Well done!

Thanks for the link. I never thought it would win - I built it in 2002. I thought the test would kill the old Era Gold off. I'm pretty sure it was the one Hi-Fi Choice sent back after giving it only 2 stars, and I thought I'm going to prove them wrong. I knew it was good because Len Gregory, Geoff Husband and Rome E Catellanes were telling me so. But I never expected the "miraculous" review published January 2004.
I was also worried because the tracks were so awkward for me to play. I could only get VLC media player to open them, and found all of them sounded brash. The least brash was 7 IMO but VLC was outputting 24/48 into a Bitzie, and not 24/96. I'm just grateful that those who voted obviously had better software than me. In that topic tg said - you may yet be surprised, it is said "there is many a fine tune played on an old fiddle" I am both surprised and delighted. Edit: something just reminded me of the Oscars. I'm just hoping this isn't another La La Land 2nd Edit: I wouldn't mind a 19% market share to match those results! Edited by Graham Slee - 01 Jul 2017 at 5:37am |

Well done again Graham and thanks for the La La Land line!
By taking all the magazine adverts and hospitality away, ignoring opinions on stats, that test has left the only think that matters. I'm pleased the EGV won, it proves that listening is what matters and shows that properly engineered hi-fi like yours is excellent and should not be judged by fashion or fad. |

Congratulations aside, there is something remarkable to note.
The Era Gold used in the test is a 15 years old model, competing against new models of recognized brands. 15 years is more than enough time for these companies to develop new circuits, layouts, or to use the new and advanced components at their disposal today to reach better sonics levels. Obviously, it is not the case: the know how inside the Era Gold is the main difference here. So one word comes to mind: VALUE. This is a very rare attribute in the hi-end scene, where the flavor of the week, especially in this vinyl renaissance era is the rule. I own a Reflex M, and a cool breeze of air against obsolescence surrounds me. |
