Sorry, but I'm lost! This thread seems to be transforming into a discussion between a limited number of people who are "into" digital this and that? I for one haven't a clue what all the scattering of letters mean e.g. SPDIF, DAP, DCS, HRT etc., so lost interest pages ago!Unhappy
Back to the thread title! How about something for us Deutsches Institut fur Normung (DIN) connected equipment fans? We are limited in the sources of good quality interconnects.Smile

Isn't HRT a menopausal Formula 1 team?

And DIN was a good description of The Voice on Saturday (and Sunday) night telly.

SPDIF is a signalling method which enables digital audio to be sent down a wire.
DAP is a digital audio player.
DCS is a maker of high end DACs.
HRT iis hormone replacement therapy???

All hi-fi is full of acronyms - look no further than peoples' signatures.

HRT are a well reviewed producer of USB dacs, .... Google hrt dac, as well as an F1 race team (how are you with engines Graham?) and of course hormone replacement therapy.

They specialise in usb bus powered dacs starting from about £160, I believe they were one of the first to introduce asynchronous usb to the affordable end of the market.

I came across this piece the other week on why 192/24 downloads "make no sense". The author is the guy behind the Vorbis format.

For some, hi-fi is a numbers game - with bigger numbers being "better": faster sampling, greater bit depth, deeper lows, higher highs etc. Confused

It's unfortunate, but that's what the majority of the market does/expects IMO . . .

So 24/96 would "have" to be a de facto minimum.

I've a few Classic Records HDAD silver discs - 24/96 on one side playable in a DVD player, and 24/192 playable in a DVD-A player (or "Universal" player like my Oppo). I can't tell which side is which from the sound quality. This means a) my system is not sufficiently resolving, b) my ear/brain subsystem isn't sufficiently resolving or <gasp> c) there IS no difference perceptually.</gasp>

I have a few really nice sounding LPs, which sound a lot better than the harsh, flat-sounding CD versions. When I sample them at 16/44 uncompressed using my portable audio player, and then play them back through a good DAC, they sound exactly like the excellent LP reproduction, with all the nuances and image depth intact.

According to steak and mince, this should be impossible? But it's plausible that my humble TT and DAP is doing a better job than the CD remastering engineer who didn't understand the medium he was working in.

I have to throw in a differing opinion here. While it's true a good vinyl rip often sounds much better than most CD remasters even though the reolution is the same, a higher bit depth and sampling rate will almost definitely result in greater depth and imaging. More 3D to put it simply. IMO the CD resolution file just sounds a lot flatter although it's just right in every other sense.
