Hi Jon. Sorry for the delay, there is something wrong with my forum email notifications!
I meant the service manuals as well. I have them both.
Storage and tape age are definitely major factors.
My plan is to give the Akai a bit of a service to improve the mechanics. I will then try a 'new' recording and go from there. Possible next steps will be a degauss then a tweak of its settings.

All when I can find the time!

That's okay, it's been busy at my end also with the start of the academic year here. I thought my TR-474 was a goner when playing back my recordings (see above!) but the commercial ones were still pretty good. I did some test recordings and was very impressed by the playback quality. My 4 and 8 track stuff was still okay but that used dbx which is a compander NR sytem rather than level specific filtering like Dolby.
