Dave Brubeck - recommendations?

Dave Brubeck was extremely popular for a jazz artist and most of his records sold very well and are not hard to find. Clean copies of his Columbia Lps can be found at reasonable, (3-$5, here in the US) prices in used record stores. "Time Out" is an audiophile classic recording and includes the hit "Take Five". You really should get a copy of it if you don't have one. The rest of the "Time" series: "Time Further Out", "Time In", "Time Changes" are all equally excellent, if less celebrated. These Lps all feature the wonderful alto saxophonist, Paul Desmond and his light, melodic playing makes a great foil for Brubeck's piano style. The Brubeck Quartet Columbia lps are all well recorded, sound great in stereo and recommended. His earlier Lps on the Fantasy label, mostly in mono, are very good too, especially the Storyville and Blackhawk live albums. Original pressings of the Fantasy records are harder to find but reissues of most are available inexpensively.
As for other artists, it's hard to know where to begin, but sticking with pianists on Columbia, you might try the Thelonious Monk Quartet recordings. He was on Columbia contemporaneously with Brubeck and again the records are well recorded and pressed.   "Monk's Dream" is a standout but they are all excellent and recommended, excepting the controversial big band Lp. Original pressings are not expensive but will cost more than Brubeck.
