I have a few new alums that are non-black should we say.

My latest one (fairground attraction) is a mottled pinky colour and dropping the stylus at the correct point isn’t as easy as on black vinyl due to what appears to be a combination of the lack of reflections and less distinct grooves.

Does anyone else have these experiences - a light could be helpful and yes I have just got new glasses!

I thought that the beauty of playing vinyl records was that it invited the habit of playing a side from start to finish, and you'd get to hear material that you'd not be immediately drawn to.
You might even grow to love the not immediately catchy tunes more than the obvious hits.

That's the habit I and many others cultivated back in our formative years.
I've managed to cultivate the habit in my just turned 18 year old son too, which is very much against the grain as far as his contemporaries go.

The problem of cueing certain songs doesn't raise its head.

In answer to your question, I'd have problems trying to cue specific tracks on Donald Fagen's "Sunken Condos", because it's on clear vinyl.
Thankfully it's a Donald Fagen album, so all the songs are worth hearing again and again.

I have a double LP set by Secret Machines "Now Here Is Nowhere", which is on white vinyl, and thankfully all the songs are worth hearing too.

yes Chris you are correct I am sure most of us play the whole side but unlike for example a CD you can’t pause it so if disturbed say by phone etc generally warrants lifting off to play from start of track again.

Even start if Side isn’t easy with this album as it isn’t east to see where the run in groove stats/ends!

I share your pain Richard Disapprove. On my own, I always play complete album sides but every few weeks when in the UK, I and my pals have a music night where we take turns to play 3 or 4 favourite tracks from various albums. With coloured or clear vinyl it is often hit & miss although a twist-neck light by the turntable helps.
Older than I once was, younger than I'll be

thanks Andrew yes a light would be a help I tend to look down rather than as perhaps should from the front.  Shank is quite naked i.e. Protrudes from the body.

I think Andrew has already covered this but an LED reading light with a min-gooseneck may be just the job and will probably sit or clip onto the shelf or frame your turntable is sitting on. I took the idea from the cue lights on the many Technics decks we had in our DJ booths over the years (and my SL1210 has one).

I am now tempted to make a removable cue light to sit on the acylic base of my Gorbe. Based on a torch but with the light turned 90 degrees... hmmm.

There is an excellent light available called "Littlelite" which I use and can fully recommend, absolutely perfect for turntables. It's from the US so probably comparatively expensive but may give you some ideas...
