There was no reason given for CD sales going up more of a theory, It goes - people in isolation needed more attachment to their music, the band or artists and having something in their hands gave them more of this than streaming (Not sure what they meant by that) there was also the theory that people living on there own also got human contact when the parcel was delivered, now this I do understand. What I would of liked was, what was the affect this had on download sales as this was not mentioned. Last year I took delivery of some music on vinyl and the man did say to me that he had noticed a lot more of what he thought was vinyl or CDs was being delivered, so the theory of human contact may have something in it.
What also was not mentioned was weather this was just a blip (as I think) or people will carry on buy their music this way.

on the Entertainment Retail Association (ERA) website they said that UK download sales were down 18% last year on 2019 sales and CD sales were down 28 % but they did put this down to the shops being closed for most of the year. So it looks like we didn't follow the USA and Canada in seeing an increase in CD sales. They didn't put a figure on vinyl sales. What was interesting as for films DVD sales took a nose dive and most films were now being downloaded, I don't weather this also included Blu-ray disks. What is interesting is they are saying people in the USA are afraid of not being able to replace old or warn out CD players with new ones and that this is fuelling the decline in CDs sales before the 2020 increase, I would have thought this would of made more people less likely to buy CDs in 2020, so this makes me wonder what IS going on.

Thanks Jon. That's a really good point about CD players, they could become one of those devices that need specialist maintenance, or rubber belts, to keep them running and we're in a world where people replace rather than repair. Anyway that helps to explain why charity shop CD's are cheap. And they don't take video cassettes.

I still have VHS tapes, Been meaning to transfer them to digital but it's so expensive. Some may not be worth it also, That's probably why I keep them (just in case, one day) I'll get round to it. It's just nice knowing that there. What you said about maintenance of CD players, This is what some may have been thinking about with the turntable when CDs came out. With the popularity of compact cassettes seemingly on the increase this is what people are having to do to play them, I don't think there are any good players for sale? Second hand ones I have seen for sale have been going for big bucks. One thing I seem certain about is CDs will become a niche play back format.

I've never sold a CD in 36 years & they're roughly arranged in bought order in custom made & Quadraspire CD racks mounted to the walls. It's like a trip through the past.
Many CDs are also ripped to PC & the SQ is equally good (or not good depending on the recording). |
