My experience with a GSP phono amp is it will take about 10 days for burn in. It gives you a lot of time to get your speaker’s placed so you can really appreciate your new setup. Play around with the speakers, proper toe in, where they give you the best bass and sound.

As silly as it might sound, I believe it is capacitor charging and total energy stored in the system that affects the speed/phase of the output going into the speaker or headphone. After considerable power-on time, the electronics collectively achieve maximum stored charge so this will surely improve slew rate so voltages will swing with greater ease and faster pace. The entire signal chain is a cascade of electromagnetism so that is just how I look at it.
How long it takes to reach optimum charge depends on the stored energy in the components at initial power-on. For a new product, they need more time to store electrical energy and acclimatise. Components with residual charge from previous use will revert sooner.

I never heard anyone explain burn-in in such detail. I don't understand electronics well enough to comment on the concept of leaving gear on all the time and accumulating charge in the capacitors or whatever.. I'll just watch out for the changes Ash mentioned, if I'll be able to hear them, that will prove burn-in for me...

There must be a rational explanation along these lines to explain the difference. The sound at initial first use compared directly to prolonged extended use is far too different to be placebo or a figment of the imagination. My increased enjoyment of my music reassures me that something has changed. I am surprised more people who use electrostatic headphones or speakers don't mention how power-on time affects performance. Surely the charge held on the stators will affect the impulse response of the diaphragm, as another example. I think the before and after difference would be quite stark.

just imagine all the audiophiles out there who don’t know this, upgrading their equipment to get better sound.
Thanks Graham.

Maybe some equipment just is not designed with burn-in in mind? A circuit that does not always draw power for example. Or a circuit that gets very warm, thus prohibiting the leave-it-on-all-the-time practice.

I'm merely postulating. I find electromagnetism quite an interesting topic, especially when looking into electric fields, magnetic flux density, dipole alignment, quanta and so on. This one elementary area of physics underpins the functioning of all technology.
Charges exert forces and forces produce motion. F=ma. It can provide an explanation for audible or measurable changes. Listening and measurement are of equal importance.
