Hi folks
Still really enjoying playing records for the first time through the new Revelation. So good. It came with the standard green plug in. Sounds superb so I’m wondering what the difference might be if I upgrade to the £150 jobbie? Anyone done this or do people usually shell out for the better one in the first place?

I have a Green supply here. I've never used it. I'll try it in place of the PSU1 on my ReflexM, and report back. Don't hold your breath - it could be a few days before I get around to it. |

That is handy, thanks Chris. I had a Rev M I never did the comparison of my PSU1 which I used and the original SMPS 'green' supply I had. I did do this with my GSP Genera MM phono preamp which came with an SMPS and I bought a PSU1 because it gave the Genera a clearer sound with better bass. The Rev M is a very good preamp and you'll get more from it with a PSU1 IMO. You are welcome to borrow a PSU1 if you want Tim to try it before buying one. |

I’m assuming based on my experience with GS kit that if it didn’t sound better you wouldn’t build it.
Just don’t know if I’d hear the difference in my kit? 🤔 Can I buy one sale or return? TBH, I’m fairly sure I’ll dig it. |

I have similar faith in Graham's developments based on my experience. You can buy a PSU1 online from Hifi System Components with a member discount and return it if dissatisfied under the Distance Selling Regs.

Well I had a play, and whilst things sound very good with the SMPS supply, I found that the track I played sounded a touch vague, and lacked precision. Tonally things were a touch bleached. None of the instruments had any kind of depth and body to them. It was more than OK, but not what I'm used to listening to. The tune was Black Cow, from the Aja album by Steely Dan. This is a warm all analogue affair (ABC Records) from pre CD days. Half way through Black Cow I switched PSUs back, and dropped the needle back at the start of the groove. That's better - there's detail in the cymbals previously lacking. There depth and tone and detail aplenty. Balance restored I'm a lot happier. I'm going to listen to the remainder of the album. I don't think anyone would switch back from replacing a Green SMPS with a PSU1. Edited by Chris Firth - 03 Sep 2018 at 10:06pm |
