What’s the general thinking here nowadays as to how many sides a stylus should play before being replaced?

I bought some mechanical tally counters to help keep track of the number of sides played.
My ATVM95ML is rated by the manufacturer for 1000 hours, so dividing the sides by 3 gives a close enough ball park figure.

Nowadays I usually replace around 500-600 hours. I used to run styli longer but don't do that anymore based on evidence from microscope photos. Anything over 1,000 hours is just asking for trouble. Older cartridges that were high compliance and tracked at very low VTFs (e.g. 1g-1.25g) can last a bit longer. 500 hours ~ 1500 sides. I listen to a fair amount of CDs and digital music so the last couple of years I get a new stylus about once a year. If you work at home and play records all day long you may wear out your stylus faster. A free smartphone app or $5 clicker counter is a very easy way to keep track of sides/hours.
