I think you are both right and it's not just dust on the stylus. I still have one of those high frequency stylus cleaning devices.

How many hours are on this stylus? The manufacturer doesn't rate it for more than 1,000 hours of play time, and in truth it will show significant wear under a microscope around the 500 hour point.

If you've got a lot of hours on it I would just get a new stylus.

The closest thing to this stylus is the VMN40ML. The main difference is the cantilever is aluminum instead of boron. ATM, AT doesn't make boron cantilevers on MM cart styli anymore. The stylus profiles are the same.

SL-1200 MK7 (modified) + Reflex M + PSU-1 used with AT150-40ML, AT VM95ML, Stanton 680mkII + Ogura, and Shure M35X cartridges.

I think you are probably right.

Will an ATN125LC fit? I can get an original.
I assume that the ML is a better profile than the LC?

The 125 will fit, but that stylus was discontinued a couple of decades ago or more. I'd be concerned that the suspension has dried out and hardened, which is always a potential issue with vintage and NOS styli. If you have one already, it won't hurt to try it, but I would not recommend buying one.

I think that is sound advice. Thanks.
The ATN125LC is €140, and is NOS. I will give the VMN40ML a try at some point soon.
I have no idea how many hours I have on the AT150MLX. I bought it second hand. After it’s little bath, it is sounding good, but a new stylus may surprise me.

I don’t have a sufficiently powerful enough microscope to see if the stylus is worn, so I have no real way of checking it.

I don't have a suitable microscope either, but have seen microscope photos from reliable sources. It can be tricky to get the lighting right and you need a 200X+ magnification. The cheap USB things don't really work either.

In one case I sent a cartridge out to a retipping specialist to get inspected and they sent me back photos and test results. I don't know if that is an option in your area.

The easiest thing for most people to do is just count sides and then divide by 3 to track hours. I use a phone app but you can also get a cheap clicker counter.

With these ML styli, what happens is the "fin" at the peak gets worn down over time. When the peak is fully worn down the contact points on the tip widen and that can cause the stylus to almost hit the bottom of the groove which results in excess noise. In some cases with severe wear the stylus can turn into a sharp cutting tool which is not good for your records.

I think the laser cut microlines have a lot to offer but agree with you, when they wear out it is bad news for the records
