I think this "better" or "different" phenomena goes deeper. By its very nature a recorded musical performance is necessarily different from the live event, and in the case of studio recordings laid down track by track where no live event exists we have to relate the sound to our expectations of it: how low should the bass go, that ringing on the cymbals - is it really natural (whatever that is - and how many of us can say we've heard a cymbal closeup as a reference?) ? Any number of processing stages will have been used to tailor the music (gating, reverb, compression).
All along the line from performance to our ears, the music passes through processes and equipment tuned (for want of a better word) by individuals with their own take on how natural sounding (or appealing) their particular piece of equipment is. When the music gets to the consumer we fret over cartridges, cables, amplifiers, speakers etc adding another layer of personal preferences to the mix. Indeed the "audiophile" industry** relies on Joe Public being unsatisfied to a greater or lesser degree and being encouraged to buy something to get them closer to the holy grail of perfection. I read about many professional musicians, orchestral players, who have very modest hi-fi systems. They realise there's no point embarking on such a pointless quest! As for me - I'm just going to swap out a cartridge for one that'll give me that extra special something for the cymbals on the Freddie Hubbard Blue Note that's on my turntable at the moment. (I wonder what microphones Rudy van Gelder used for this, what valves he used, the brand of tape . . . ) ** I'm definitely excluding Graham here!

Bob, I wholeheartedly agree.
The Audiofool industry summed up in 3 sentences. Some truly erudite observations. Ian |

Thanks Jon/Ian. Just some observations. If it weren't for the snow I'd be off to my AA meeting (not the drink-related one!).

I think the "audiofool" here relates to some less-than-scrupulous manufacturers rather than their users, Savas. Too often the marketing of equipment relies on buzzwords and indeterminate jargon that only the truly technical experts can see through. The average buyer has to take everything on trust, or hope for an accommodating dealer (or a loan scheme like Graham's).
How many pieces of hi-fi are just fancy cases containing cheap Chinese-made components - priced for what the vendor thinks the market will stand? These sellers are the one taking us for fools - and for most of time we don't realise it!

I would certainly agree with Bob, Savas. There are also those that are obsessed by the "bling" and meaningless specifications/features used by some of manufacturers rather than the sound. Are these people perhaps audiofools rather than audiophiles (whatever that may mean).
I think it's akin to those who boast about how powerful their cars are, they can be seen at the front of the traffic light queue every time. I would hasten to add that I don't believe such people can be found here, we're far too "down to earth". Ian Edited by BackinBlack - 08 Mar 2018 at 4:17pm |
