Okay... I posted on the burn-in thread as well, but this is good. It just has to be powered up, right? I don't need to have records going for 504 continuous hours... LOL

Just keep the phono stage powered up (there's no on/off switch for a good reason!) and enjoy your records from day 1! You'll get drawn in to the music, which, after all is what it's all about. Wink

At the end of the day, I just want my discs to sound as good as realistically possible.

Thanks for the input Bob. You're absolutely right.

So, I've upgraded to a Ortofon 2M Bronze from my Exact. Really liking it so far, even though it still needs to burn in a bit...
In an interesting turn of events, a local dealer has a used tube preamp that is highly regarded and upgraded with more stuff on top of it, a $3000 preamp, all-in, for $1k. I'm borrowing it, and I have to say, I prefer the sound of the Era Gold V. I guess tube coloration just isn't really my bag... it seems to just really mellow everything out. It sounds nice, but I guess I tend to prefer what most would call "analytical." I just call it "flat" or "uncolored."

It's a very interesting world, this.... Still, 95% sure I am going to get the Accession :)

Interesting? I would use stronger language, but I'd better not. I cannot afford to keep feeding the swear box.

The Era Gold V does the "valve thing" technically speaking, and from my memory of how things sounded.

I don't think Xi's prole manufactured valves are made in the same way as the US/UK used to make them back in the 50's and 60's. They probably burn the oxygen off by using up Tibetan monks incense! Evil Smile

Haha! Yeah, I think I'd have to spend a small fortune on different valves to get the whole thing sounding right, but I feel like I'd just be changing the "colour."

What do you mean, that the Era Gold does the "valve thing?" I don't think it sounds like it's colouring the music at all, or at least, way less than the (insert other preamp name here).

You must forgive me for my slightly flipant attitude this morning.

I am sure I can remember a time when valves did not sound so colored as they seem to sound today, at least in professional sound reinforcement, if not in hi-fi.

The positive virtue was the wider open-loop frequency response which, with negative feedback applied, made the bass and mids sound more real.

The Era Gold V emulates this virtue by doing the same. And also there is something else its design has in common with the older/original art - and I'm sure one day somebody will twig, perhaps in another world or on another planet, and thinking about it, it would have to be - but it is my little trade secret.

By comparison, today's valves seem like they are very much different to how I remember them.

But it could be my immagination... Wink
