All the gear and maybe some idea! ![]() 12" Box and pan brake from Chester Hobby Store (£221). Trend magnetic angle finder (£18.95). ![]() Small hole punch from W Neal Services (£110), mounted for ease of use in a do it yourself holder. ![]() 12" sheet metal guillotine from Warco (£192.50). Hole punch swung out of its way. The brake and guillotine can also be sourced from Grizzly in the US, and the hole punch equivalent is the Roper Whitney Model XX. My intention is to have the panels mounted from the inside of the woodwork so as not to require any fancy finishes. Also that the panels be small, so a bit of satin black spray paint will suffice. I have no intention to make Ryan go to the extremes of wood finishing as per the video. Sanded smooth with some wood stain and wax polish will do.

This little flury of posts reminded me that I really need to give some feedback on listening to the modded amp! (The idea of a nice wooden case for it is very appealing as the current prototype looks are purposeful rather than interior-decor friendly!)
So, the new cool-running amp sounds smooth, powerful and effortless. I guess it's a truism to say that it just gets out of the way of the music. There's nothing to draw attention to the process of amplification; no apparent artifacts leap out at you. I've been listening a lot to various jazz records, mostly Blue Notes, and the crisp percussion, textured bass notes and earthy horns are rendered as well as I've heard them. Orchestral music is conveyed with either delicacy or thunderous impact, and vocals - whether classical, jazz or pop - have an immediacy that's almost tangible. I tuned in to the BBC2 Burt Bacharach tribute from Ronnie Scott's the other evening and this was reproduced with a wonderful sense of the occasion. Trying to review hifi is a fraught with pitfalls. All I can report is how this amp performs for me, in my system, and as they say YMMV. But the bottom line is that I'd be very happy to live with this amp (in a wooden case ![]() Now - who should I send this on to for a further listen?

Thanks Bob! I think we've just about realised that this amp and its preamp are never going to be a commercial product. I think the ancient Peruvians would have had a better chance of manufacturing it, than we lowly English. But to be a successful DIY amp and preamp it would need to have some enthusiasm behind it, and that also seems to be sadly lacking. Never mind. Bob might not remember, but I said quite a few years ago that I'd like a "good old fashioned amplifier" to be able to assess the true sound quality of what I was developing at the time. I guess in that I'm in a minority of one. The lack of enthusiasm eventually drained mine, and that's why I threw in the towel. So now, the work I set out on some five years ago remains my indulgence and it looks like it will remain that way. I used to treat it with urgency, but as five years R&D demonstrated, that urgency wasn't shared, and the situation remains the same to this day. I'm pleased to say that I've now other interests, and my chilli peppers have grown into reasonably sturdy plants. The bell peppers sown in March are nearly ready to be pricked out, and the tomatoes need to be sown within the next couple of weeks. These are taking up the man cave patio-door desk area, and the DOS computer "George" is giving ground to them. RS Components seems to be morphing into yet another industrial and janitorial supplies catalogue, and serious electronics things are all on back order, with back order delivery dates being constantly pushed toward oblivion. Therefore, any constructional advancement of this now DIY project looks like it could occur in May. But that may be too optimistic. In the meantime, the preamp has now realised its ceramic input configuration for those crazy enough to use ceramic cartridges. That's if such types are able to buy one. So, I may chip into this thread now and then when there's something worth reporting. It would be nice if somebody else will give the modded power amp a try. Unfortunately it will all have to be a community thing from now on as I don't have a shipping account and neither have I the money to pay for it all. And that's because I retired and I'm spinning that money out in lieu of a pension.

I think I do recall you talking about a good old fashasioned amplifier, Graham. I'd say this one fits the bill perfectly. It's just a real shame its future isn't exactly rosy.
But good to know the (Red Hot) chilli peppers etc are doing well

Transistors done properly carried a different sound and musical is more organic . The digital storage of music was convenient and neat and clean and clear but analogue is more natural to the huma ear still. That is why the new digital electronic generation accept to pay 4 times more for Vinyl and to have their digital music ressemble more analogue , particularly acoustic instruments that Engineers pay significant to have so installed " Plug-in" in their Console.
I read the High end audio designers have recourse to Analogue Hybrid to the G /D Class equipment, convenience of electronic but the tone of analogue is irresistible and is Not comparable to clean digital sound. Vinyl is now back on monthly specialist Street Market sale in North London and Centre West as demand is generated. let the 70'S Amp Design and Made in UK and let it tone ears to musicality and Time will tell......Twin Mono identical analogue transistor amp ...and they still make 300B and KT88 A2 Valves as demands is regenerated and Vinyl has overtaken CD's convenient clean clear sounds .....Time will tell ... |
